Hypnosis Eases The Pain of Childbirth and Labor
Self-hypnosis for relaxation during childbirth allows mothers to utilize their inner
resources and focus their mind-body to have a natural and more satisfying birthing experience. Modern medical interventions can
be credited with saving lives and easing the pain and suffering of many. However, for the majority of women,
the natural process of childbirth shouldn't require too many interventions. Women need more options for
preparing for birthing so that they can be active participants in the process.
Hypnosis
is an excellent tool to aid childbirth and promote a calmer, more comfortable pregnancy. Research has shown that mothers
who experience a high level of stress during pregnancy tend to have a more difficult time giving birth and the stress also
has an adverse effect on the baby. Stress can create changes in mother's body that restrict blood flow, and
oxygen to the baby. Other studies have found that oxygenation to the baby is increased when pregnant
women relax during hypnosis.
- Hypnosis has been shown to reduce the time spent in
labor by as much as 50 percent.
- Hypnosis can alter perceptions of pain.
- Hypnosis can be used to distort time, so that contractions seem to last for only a moment.
- As an analgesic for labor and delivery, self-hypnosis is safe for the baby and is non-sedating
for the mother.
- If chemical anesthesia or analgesia is needed or desired, smaller
amounts can be effective when used together with self-hypnosis.
